Gnosticism

Gnosticism encompasses a diverse set of ancient religious and philosophical movements united by the belief that the material world is the flawed creation of a lesser deity, and that humanity contains a divine spark capable of liberation through esoteric knowledge. Drawing on Jewish scripture, Platonic philosophy, and early Christian texts, Gnostic thinkers constructed elaborate cosmologies and philosophies of salvation that challenged both orthodox Christianity and Neoplatonism.
