Objective reason, in its classical and idealist forms, held that reason could adjudicate between competing ends — that there was a rational basis for preferring a just life to an unjust one, a meaningful life to a trivial one, a genuinely good social order to a merely stable one. This was not reason as the capacity of any given individual but reason as a structure inherent in reality itself, a logos that the philosophical tradition from Plato through Hegel sought to articulate. On this view, the task of philosophy was to bring human practice into alignment with an objective rational order.
Subjective reason abandons all claims to adjudicate between ends. It is purely formal and instrumental: given whatever ends a subject happens to have, it calculates the most efficient means to achieve them. Whether the end is happiness, profit, political domination, or genocide makes no difference to subjective reason considered as such — it is indifferent to content and concerned only with formal efficiency. The Enlightenment critique of tradition and authority — which was, in its original form, a liberation — ended by undermining the objective basis of reason itself, leaving only the empty formalism of subjective calculation.
The triumph of subjective reason leaves society without philosophical resources for the critique of existing power. If reason cannot identify any end as genuinely worth pursuing, then the ends that actually prevail — those produced by market forces, political power, or irrational tradition — cannot be criticised on rational grounds. Philosophy becomes either technical problem-solving (the positivist ideal) or irrational assertion (existentialism, nationalism, religious fundamentalism). The eclipse of reason is also the eclipse of the critical function of philosophy.
Eclipse of Reason was based on lectures delivered at Columbia University in 1944 and revised for publication in 1947. It is Horkheimer's most systematic work and should be read alongside Dialectic of Enlightenment, which it supplements rather than repeats.
