Reformation

The Protestant Reformation, sparked by Luther's challenge to the authority of the Catholic Church, transformed European religion and philosophy. Questions of conscience, scriptural interpretation, the nature of faith, and the relationship between religious and civil authority became urgent and contested. Thinkers from Calvin to Melanchthon to Richard Hooker developed new theologies that would shape modernity's understanding of individual conscience and political legitimacy.
