Written as an accessible introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason after that work's initial poor reception, the Prolegomena presents Kant's transcendental idealism in its most direct form. Starting from the fact of mathematics and Newtonian physics, Kant asks how synthetic a priori knowledge is possible and what this reveals about the limits of metaphysical inquiry. It remains the clearest entry point into his theoretical philosophy.
