Gottlob Frege
Analytic
1848–1925 · Contemporary
Gottlob Frege was a German philosopher and logician who is regarded as the father of analytic philosophy and modern logic. His work on the foundations of arithmetic and the distinction between sense and reference transformed philosophy of language.
Frege's Begriffsschrift invented modern predicate logic, and his distinction between Sinn (sense) and Bedeutung (reference) became a cornerstone of twentieth-century philosophy of language. Russell's discovery of a paradox in Frege's system was a devastating blow, but the framework he created endured.
Every good mathematician is at least half a philosopher, and every good philosopher is at least half a mathematician.
