Bertrand Russell
Analytic
1872–1970 · Contemporary
Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and public intellectual whose work spanned more than seventy years and transformed the foundations of analytic philosophy. His collaboration with Whitehead on Principia Mathematica attempted to reduce all of mathematics to logic. His theory of descriptions resolved longstanding puzzles about reference and meaning, and his development of logical atomism shaped the analytic tradition. He was also a prolific public philosopher, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950.
