George Santayana was a Spanish-American philosopher, poet, and cultural critic who taught at Harvard alongside William James and Josiah Royce. A naturalist who rejected both idealism and pragmatism's instrumentalism, he explored beauty, religion, and civilisation with literary elegance.

Santayana's system distinguished between the realm of essence (what can be contemplated), matter (what causes experience), truth, and spirit. His Scepticism and Animal Faith argued that knowledge is always interpretive, grounded in animal faith rather than certainty. His cultural criticism in The Life of Reason remains a classic of philosophical humanism.
