William James
Pragmatism
1842–1910 · Contemporary
William James was an American philosopher and psychologist who was one of the founders of pragmatism and a pioneer of empirical psychology. His Principles of Psychology established psychology as a scientific discipline, while his philosophical work developed a thoroughgoing empiricism that took the "stream of consciousness" seriously as the primary datum of philosophical reflection. His pragmatist account of truth and his explorations of religious experience made him one of the most widely read philosophers of his generation.
