John Stuart Mill
Utilitarianism
1806–1873 · Modern Philosophy
John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher, economist, and political theorist who was the most influential liberal thinker of the nineteenth century. His Utilitarianism refined Bentham's greatest happiness principle into a more nuanced account that distinguished between qualities as well as quantities of pleasure. On Liberty mounted a defence of individual freedom against social and state coercion that remains one of the canonical texts of liberal political thought.
The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way.
