Iamblichus

Neoplatonism
c. 245–325 · Ancient & Classical

Iamblichus was the Syrian philosopher who transformed Neoplatonism from a theoretical metaphysics into a comprehensive system of religious practice and ritual. Where Plotinus had emphasised the mind's ascent to the One through contemplation, Iamblichus insisted that the gods could only be reached through theurgy — sacred rites that drew divine power down into the material world.

His treatise On the Mysteries defended theurgy against Porphyry's rationalist objections, arguing that the gods' gifts come not through philosophy alone but through ritual action that works beyond the limits of human intellect. Iamblichus restructured the Platonic tradition into an elaborate hierarchy of gods, daemons, angels, and souls. His theological system became the foundation for Proclus and later Neoplatonism, and shaped the mystical traditions of the Byzantine church and Renaissance Hermeticism.

The highest good is not achieved by thought alone but by the sacred acts that link the human soul to the divine order.
