Zoroaster (Zarathustra) was the ancient Iranian prophet and founder of Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions. He taught of a cosmic struggle between Ahura Mazda (truth and light) and Angra Mainyu (falsehood and darkness), calling humans to choose truth through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds.
Zoroastrian ideas of cosmic dualism, judgement, heaven and hell, and eschatology profoundly influenced Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Nietzsche's Zarathustra is a philosophical homage to and inversion of the prophet, using the name to herald the revaluation of all values.
