Neoplatonism
477–524 · Medieval

Boethius was a Roman statesman and philosopher who transmitted Greek philosophical ideas to the Latin-speaking medieval world. Written while awaiting execution, The Consolation of Philosophy explores providence, fate, free will, and the nature of true happiness.

Boethius translated Aristotle's logical works into Latin and provided the medieval West with its logical vocabulary. The Consolation of Philosophy — written without explicit reference to Christianity — became one of the most widely read books of the Middle Ages, shaping thought from Chaucer to Dante.

This is my art, this the game I never cease to play. I turn the wheel that spins. I delight to see the high come down and the low ascend.
