Abu Hamid al-Ghazali was a Persian theologian, jurist, and mystic who is among the most influential figures in Islamic intellectual history. His Incoherence of the Philosophers mounted a devastating critique of Islamic Aristotelianism, arguing that the metaphysical claims of al-Farabi and Avicenna contradicted Islamic theology. His autobiographical Deliverance from Error describes his spiritual crisis and eventual refuge in Sufi mysticism, and his Ihya Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences) remains one of the most widely read works in the Islamic world.
