Skepticism

Ancient Skepticism held that for every argument there is an equal and opposite argument, making suspension of judgement the rational response. This suspension, the Skeptics claimed, produced tranquillity rather than paralysis. The tradition had a powerful revival in the early modern period, shaping Montaigne, Descartes, and Hume, and remains central to epistemology today.
