Thales
Pre-Socratic
624–548 BC · Ancient & Classical
Thales of Miletus is widely regarded as the first philosopher in the Western tradition — the earliest of the Pre-Socratic thinkers who sought natural rather than mythological explanations for the world. He proposed that water is the fundamental substance underlying all matter: a claim remarkable not for its conclusion but for its ambition — to explain the world's diversity through a single material principle without recourse to the gods.
