Herbert Spencer

Positivism
1820–1903 · Modern Philosophy

Herbert Spencer was a British philosopher who attempted to develop a comprehensive philosophical system based on the principle of evolution — predating and independent of Darwin, though he rapidly incorporated Darwinian natural selection into his framework. He coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" and applied evolutionary principles to ethics, sociology, and political theory, arguing for a laissez-faire liberalism in which social progress depends on the natural elimination of those poorly adapted to their environment.

Opinion is ultimately determined by the feelings, and not by the intellect.
