Amartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher who won the Nobel Prize in Economics. His capabilities approach evaluates human wellbeing in terms of what people are able to do and be, rather than income or utility, transforming development ethics and global justice theory.
Sen's work spans social choice theory, welfare economics, and political philosophy. His critique of utilitarian welfare economics, his account of famines as failures of entitlement rather than food supply, and his collaborative development with Martha Nussbaum of the capabilities approach have made him one of the most influential ethicists of his generation.
Development can be seen as a process of expanding the real freedoms that people enjoy.
