Pythagoras
Pre-Socratic
570–495 BC · Ancient & Classical
Pythagoras of Samos was a philosopher and mathematician who founded a religious and intellectual community devoted to the study of number as the fundamental principle of all things. Though none of his own writings survive and much of his biography is legendary, the Pythagorean tradition he initiated held that the cosmos is essentially mathematical in structure — a view that proved enormously fertile for astronomy, music theory, and metaphysics.
Number is the ruler of forms and ideas, and the cause of gods and daemons.
