George Edward Moore
Analytic
1873–1958 · Contemporary
G.E. Moore was a British philosopher and a founding figure of analytic philosophy. His defence of common sense against idealism and his analysis of goodness as an indefinable, non-natural property were enormously influential in ethics and epistemology.
Moore's Principia Ethica introduced the naturalistic fallacy and revived intuitionist ethics. His defence of common sense — the view that certain ordinary beliefs are simply more certain than any philosophical argument against them — helped set the agenda for the analytic tradition.
Good is good, and that is the end of the matter.
