Diogenes
Cynicism
412–323 BC · Ancient & Classical
Diogenes of Sinope was a Greek philosopher and the most famous exemplar of the Cynic school. Exiled from Sinope for defacing the currency — metaphorically as well as literally his philosophical mission — he settled in Athens and made a virtue of homeless poverty, living in a large ceramic jar and owning almost nothing. He rejected all social conventions, political institutions, and cultural norms as artificial corruptions of nature.
I am a citizen of the world.
