Auguste Comte
Positivism
1798–1857 · Modern Philosophy
Auguste Comte was a French philosopher who founded positivism and is often regarded as the first philosopher of science in the modern sense. He coined the term "sociology" and argued that human thought progresses through theological, metaphysical, and scientific stages, with the scientific stage representing the apex of intellectual development.
Comte's influence on sociology, the social sciences, and the philosophy of science was enormous. His insistence that genuine knowledge must be empirically verifiable anticipated logical positivism and remains a touchstone in debates about the demarcation of science from non-science.
