1126–1198 · Medieval

Ibn Rushd, known in the West as Averroes, was an Andalusian philosopher and jurist who wrote the most extensive and influential commentaries on Aristotle of the medieval period, earning him the title "The Commentator" from Aquinas and other Latin scholars. His philosophical project was to recover the authentic Aristotle from Neoplatonic distortions, and his commentaries were so essential that for centuries Aristotle was studied through Averroes in both the Islamic world and Christian Europe.
