Bergson’s first book and the source of his central idea: real time — pure duration — is a qualitative flow in which conscious states permeate one another, not a line of separate instants. Determinism, he argues, arises from confusing this lived duration with space; freedom is recovered the moment we grasp our acts as expressions of the whole self in time.
